There are certain colors that make you glow, look vibrant, and appear younger. There are also hues that instantly make you look washed out, tired, and even sick. Once you know the right colors for you, shopping for both fashion and beauty becomes so much easier. One of the ways to select the colors that your were born to wear is by knowing your skin’s undertone.
But what exactly is an undertone? And how do you find out what yours is? We are answering these important style questions in this post, showing you several different ways to discover what your undertone is, and therefore, what colors you should definitely wear.
What is an Undertone?
Let’s start with what an undertone is. A skin’s undertone are the colors within your skin tone, or the hues your skin gives off. Two people could have the same skin tone, but completely different undertones.
Types of Undertones
Now that we know what undertones are, let’s delve into the different types. If your skin gives off pink, red, or blue undertones, you are cool-toned. If your skin’s undertones are yellow, golden, or peach, then you’re warm-toned. Neutral means your skin gives off both these hues, or none at all.
Hair and Eye Color
We have looked into what undertones are and their types. Now we are going to share ways in which you can identify your skin’s undertone. The first is by looking at your hair and eye color. Does your hair have golden, red, or orange in it? How about your eyes? Do they have a warm hue, like hazel, warm brown, olive green, amber, or teal? Then you’re likely warm-toned.
On the flip side, cool hair colors will have little to no red, or other warm tones in it. Think ash browns, black, blue-black, platinum blonde, gray, silver, and other ash tones. Cool-toned eyes include light and sapphire blues, dark brown (“black”), emerald green, and gray. Note: It is totally possible to have warm and cool elements to your look (let your skin’s undertone be the deciding factor for what colors to sport.)
A Sheet of Paper
Another way to find out the undertones of your skin is by placing a white piece of paper or white T-shirt against your face. What tones do you see in your skin? Those with warm undertones will see those golden, peach, and yellow hues coming out, while those who are cool-toned will see red, pink, or blue. Neutral will see perhaps both of these types of hues, or none at all.
You could also put on a cool white shirt and a warm off-white shirt, to see which looks more flattering on you, and makes your complexion come alive.
Look at Your Veins
Need further confirmation of your undertone? The vein test is a known way to solve this mystery.
Take a look at your veins on the inside of your wrist. Are your veins blue or purple? Then your undertone is cool. Are they green or olive? Then you’re warm-toned. Neutral means that your veins show as an in-the-middle blue-green.
